Ford Ranger Payload and GVM: How Much Can You Really Carry?
A Ford Ranger can carry a lot, but not everything people bolt to it.
The payload figure in the brochure is the maximum you can add to the vehicle’s base weight. That includes passengers, cargo, the canopy, drawers, fridge, roof rack, bull bar, water, tools and towball download if you are towing. Most owners know the first few. It is the last one that catches people out.
A Ranger with 985 kg of payload sounds generous until you add a canopy (80 kg), drawers (70 kg), a bull bar (65 kg), a roof rack (25 kg), two adults (170 kg), 200 kg of tools or camping gear and a 280 kg towball download from a trailer. That is 890 kg and you have not added the fridge, water, recovery gear or the dog yet.
This guide covers what payload and GVM actually mean, the real numbers for every Ranger variant, what counts toward payload, three worked examples, how to use a weighbridge properly and when a GVM upgrade starts making sense.
Quick answer: how do you calculate Ford Ranger payload?
Basic formula:
Remaining payload = GVM minus actual vehicle weight (weighed on a weighbridge)
For planning before a weighbridge:
Remaining payload = factory payload minus accessories minus passengers minus cargo minus towball download
For towing specifically:
Payload when towing = GVM minus kerb weight minus accessories and options fitted minus towball weight
Ford uses this towing payload formula in its Ranger towing guidance. The towball weight is treated as part of the vehicle’s payload, not part of the trailer’s weight.
The honest line: if you have fitted a canopy, drawers, bull bar and roof rack and you tow a caravan, your Ranger’s real carrying capacity is much lower than the brochure number.
Payload, GVM, kerb weight and GCM explained
Payload
Payload is everything added to the vehicle after its base weight. That includes passengers, cargo, the canopy, drawers, tools, fridge, batteries, roof racks, water, recovery gear and towball download when towing. It is not just “what fits in the tub.” It is everything the vehicle carries above its kerb weight.
GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass)
GVM is the maximum the Ranger can legally weigh when fully loaded. It is set by Ford and stamped on the compliance plate. You cannot legally exceed it without a certified GVM upgrade.
Kerb weight
Kerb weight is the vehicle’s base weight in standard condition, with fluids and fuel, but before accessories, passengers and cargo. Ford notes that vehicle weights are approximate and can vary between individual vehicles.
GCM (Gross Combined Mass)
GCM is the maximum legal combined weight of the loaded Ranger plus the loaded trailer. You can be under GVM and under the trailer’s ATM but still over GCM if the combined total exceeds the limit.
Ford Ranger GVM and payload by variant
Ford updates specs by model year, engine, cab type and body style. The figures below are based on the current Next Gen Ranger range (CarsGuide and Newcastle Herald, sourced from Ford Australia data). Always confirm your specific variant’s figures from the compliance plate or Ford’s latest specification sheet.
| Variant | Body style | GVM | Approx. kerb weight | Approx. payload | Towing | GCM |
| XL Single Cab Chassis (2.0 BiT) | Cab chassis | 3,060 to 3,200 kg | ~1,789 to 1,900 kg | Up to ~1,327 kg | 3,500 kg | ~6,000 kg |
| XL/XLS Double Cab Pick Up | Pick up | 3,200 to 3,270 kg | ~2,100 to 2,200 kg | ~1,000 to 1,100 kg | 3,500 kg | ~6,000 to 6,350 kg |
| XLT Double Cab Pick Up | Pick up | 3,200 to 3,270 kg | ~2,150 to 2,250 kg | ~1,000 to 1,050 kg | 3,500 kg | ~6,350 kg |
| Sport Double Cab Pick Up | Pick up | 3,200 to 3,270 kg | ~2,200 to 2,280 kg | ~990 to 1,050 kg | 3,500 kg | ~6,350 kg |
| Wildtrak Double Cab Pick Up (V6) | Pick up | 3,350 kg | ~2,353 kg | ~985 to 1,000 kg | 3,500 kg | ~6,350 kg |
| Raptor | Pick up | 3,130 kg | ~2,431 kg | ~753 kg | 2,500 kg | ~5,630 kg |
| Super Duty Double Cab | Cab chassis | 4,500 kg | ~2,675 kg | Up to 1,825 kg | 4,500 kg | 8,000 kg |
Important: These are approximate figures. Your specific vehicle may differ. Ford says vehicles should be weighed before and after adding load, accessories or towing to confirm GVM, GCM and axle masses are not exceeded.
Notice the range: the Wildtrak V6 has roughly 985 kg of payload, while the Raptor sits at only 753 kg. The Super Duty Double Cab starts at 1,825 kg before the tray. Same nameplate, very different carrying capacity. For how the Super Duty changes the accessory equation, see our Ford Ranger Super Duty accessories guide covering payload planning and fitment differences.
What actually counts toward payload?
Accessories count
Every accessory bolted to the vehicle comes off the payload: canopy, bull bar, winch, towbar, roof rack, driving lights, long range tank, second battery, drawer system and fridge slide. These are permanent weight that reduces your available capacity for everything else.
Fitout counts
Shelves, drawers, fridge, water tank, toolboxes, work gear, recovery gear and camping boxes all count. If it is in or on the vehicle, it is payload.
People and pets count
Passengers, kids, dogs, luggage and food all count toward payload. Two adults weigh roughly 160 to 180 kg. Four adults can be 300 to 360 kg.
Towball download counts
This is the one most owners miss. Ford’s payload calculator treats towball download as weight pushing down on the vehicle’s towball and uses 10 percent of loaded trailer weight as an indicative estimate unless the owner’s manual says otherwise.
A 3,500 kg caravan with 10 percent ball weight puts 350 kg on the Ranger’s rear. That is 350 kg less payload for everything else. On a Wildtrak with 985 kg payload, a 350 kg towball download leaves 635 kg for the canopy, accessories, passengers and cargo combined.
The accessory stacking problem
Typical accessory weights for planning
| Item | Typical planning weight |
| Steel canopy | 80 to 120 kg |
| Aluminium canopy | 50 to 90 kg |
| Drawer system | 40 to 100 kg+ |
| Bull bar | 50 to 90 kg |
| Winch | 25 to 40 kg |
| Roof platform | 25 to 40 kg |
| Rooftop tent | 40 to 90 kg+ |
| Fridge plus slide | 35 to 70 kg |
| 12V battery system | 25 to 70 kg |
| Water | 1 kg per litre |
| Recovery gear | 10 to 40 kg |
| Towball download | Often 200 to 350 kg when towing heavy |
Most people do not overload a Ranger with one accessory. They overload it by stacking five or six “reasonable” accessories together.
Common mistake: Looking at each accessory in isolation and thinking “that is only 80 kg, no problem.” The problem appears when you add them all up and realise the total is 400 to 600 kg before passengers or cargo.
Worked example 1: tradie Ranger (XLT Double Cab Pick Up)
| Item | Weight |
| Aluminium canopy | 90 kg |
| Drawer and shelving fitout | 80 kg |
| Tools and consumables | 250 kg |
| Ladder racks | 25 kg |
| Bull bar | 70 kg |
| Driver plus passenger | 170 kg |
| Compressor and 12V gear | 30 kg |
| Total added weight | 715 kg |
On an XLT with roughly 1,000 to 1,050 kg payload, this setup leaves 285 to 335 kg of margin. That sounds fine until you add extra materials, a third person, fuel variation or a towball download from a small trailer.
Tradies should weigh the ute in real work condition, not empty on a Sunday. For how tradie fitouts and service body weights stack up, see our Ford Ranger tradesman setup guide covering the canopy vs service body decision and weight implications.
Worked example 2: touring Ranger (XLT Double Cab Pick Up)
| Item | Weight |
| Aluminium canopy | 80 kg |
| Drawer system | 70 kg |
| Fridge plus slide | 50 kg |
| Dual battery and 12V | 45 kg |
| Roof platform | 30 kg |
| Awning | 20 kg |
| Rooftop tent | 65 kg |
| Water (60 L) | 60 kg |
| Recovery gear | 30 kg |
| Two adults | 170 kg |
| Dog and gear | 40 kg |
| Total added weight | 660 kg |
That leaves 340 to 390 kg of margin on an XLT. Sounds okay until a trailer or caravan is added. A 280 kg towball download drops the remaining margin to 60 to 110 kg for camping gear, food, clothing and anything else. For how roof weight and rooftop tent maths affect the payload picture, see our Ford Ranger rooftop tent guide covering what fits and what is too heavy.
Worked example 3: mixed use Ranger with towing (Wildtrak V6)
| Item | Weight |
| Aluminium canopy | 75 kg |
| Basic drawer and storage | 50 kg |
| Roof racks plus awning | 45 kg |
| Two adults plus luggage | 200 kg |
| Tools and camping gear | 150 kg |
| Towball download | 280 kg |
| Total added weight | 800 kg |
On a Wildtrak with 985 kg payload, this leaves 185 kg of margin. Add a full water tank, a heavier tool load or a third passenger and the Ranger is at or over GVM.
Ford says exceeding weight limits can compromise braking distance, stability and control and can put extra stress on tyres, suspension and drivetrain. For how towing interacts with payload and what WDH and brake controllers do, see our Ford Ranger towing capacity and setup guide.
How to weigh your Ranger properly
Step 1: load it like real life
Do not weigh it empty. Load the Ranger as you would for a typical work day or trip: passengers, tools, canopy contents, fridge, water, recovery gear, camping gear and trailer if towing.
Step 2: weigh the whole vehicle
Get the total vehicle weight on a public weighbridge and compare it to your GVM.
Step 3: weigh front and rear axles separately
A Ranger can be under total GVM but still overloaded on one axle. Heavy rear accessories (canopy, drawers, water) and towball download push the rear axle. A heavy bull bar and winch push the front axle. Both axle ratings must be within limits.
Step 4: if towing, weigh coupled and uncoupled
You need the loaded Ranger weight without the trailer, the loaded trailer weight, the combined weight (check against GCM), towball download (check against towball limit) and front and rear axle weights with the trailer hitched.
Step 5: compare against the limits
Check GVM, GCM, front axle rating, rear axle rating, tow rating, towball limit and tyre load rating.
A public weighbridge costs $10 to $20 and takes five minutes. It is the cheapest and most useful piece of information in the entire build process.
Ford’s payload calculator: useful, but not the final word
Ford’s online payload and towing calculator uses a green, orange and red threshold system: green at 0 to 95 percent of capacity, orange at 96 to 99 percent and red at 100 percent and above. It uses 10 percent of loaded trailer weight as the towball download estimate unless the owner’s manual says otherwise.
It is a useful planning tool, but it is still based on your inputs. If you underestimate canopy weight, drawer weight, water, tools or towball download, the result will be wrong.
Use the calculator early for planning, then verify with a weighbridge once the build is real.
When do you need a GVM upgrade?
You may need one if…
The Ranger is over GVM when loaded. The Ranger is close to GVM before towing. Towball download pushes the ute over. You run a permanent work fitout. You run a touring canopy with drawers, roof load and water. You carry passengers and gear regularly. The ute is a fleet or work vehicle that needs compliance certainty.
You may not need one if…
The ute is comfortably under GVM when loaded. The accessories are light and occasional. The issue is ride and handling only (not legal weight). You can remove unnecessary weight. You can choose lighter gear instead.
The important distinction
A suspension upgrade improves how the ute carries weight. A certified GVM upgrade changes what the ute is legally allowed to weigh. They are related but not the same thing. For a full comparison of when each makes sense and what they cost, see our Ford Ranger suspension and GVM upgrade guide covering OME, Tough Dog and Dobinsons.
Legal, warranty and insurance implications
Legal and safety
Ford says overloading can affect braking distance, stability, tyre wear, suspension life and drivetrain stress. Operating above GVM is an offence under Australian road transport legislation and can result in fines. It also typically voids your insurance cover in the event of a claim.
Insurance
If you add a canopy, suspension, roof racks, bull bar or other significant accessories, tell your insurer and make sure the policy reflects the modified value and setup. AAMI says modifications and accessories should be reflected on your policy and that legal modifications and accessories can affect performance, value, safety or appearance. For the full insurance and warranty disclosure process, see our Ford Ranger accessories and warranty guide.
Warranty
If overloading damages suspension, drivetrain, chassis or tyres, that can create warranty issues because the vehicle was used outside its intended limits. Ford says exceeding weight limits can affect warranty coverage where damage is caused by overloading.
Common payload mistakes
- Using brochure payload without subtracting accessories already fitted
- Forgetting passengers and pets
- Forgetting towball download (it is payload, not trailer weight)
- Adding a canopy, drawers and roof tent without recalculating total weight
- Assuming a level ride means legal weight (heavy duty springs hide overloading)
- Ignoring individual axle loads while only checking total GVM
- Weighing the Ranger empty instead of loaded for a real scenario
- Thinking a suspension upgrade automatically increases legal GVM
- Not telling the insurer about major modifications
- Waiting until after the entire build to do the weight maths
Payload checklist before you build
Before adding major accessories, answer these:
- What is my exact Ranger variant?
- What is the GVM?
- What is the kerb weight?
- What is my real available payload?
- What does the canopy weigh?
- What do the drawers and fitout weigh?
- Will I tow? What is the towball download?
- How many passengers will be in the ute regularly?
- How much water, tools or camping gear do I carry?
- Do I know front and rear axle weights?
- Have I checked insurance and warranty implications?
- Have I used a weighbridge to verify the numbers?
Frequently asked questions
What is Ford Ranger payload? Payload is the maximum weight you can add to the vehicle above its kerb weight. For the Next Gen Ranger, factory payload ranges from roughly 753 kg (Raptor) to 1,327 kg (XL Single Cab Chassis), depending on variant and engine.
What is Ford Ranger GVM? GVM is the maximum the Ranger can legally weigh when fully loaded. It ranges from 3,060 kg (XL Single Cab Chassis base) to 3,350 kg (Wildtrak) for the standard Ranger. The Super Duty is 4,500 kg.
How much can a Ford Ranger carry? Depends on the variant. A Wildtrak V6 has roughly 985 kg of payload. An XLT has roughly 1,000 to 1,050 kg. But that is before accessories. Once you add a canopy, drawers, bull bar and passengers, the real remaining capacity for cargo can be significantly less.
Does canopy weight count toward payload? Yes. Everything bolted to or carried by the vehicle counts toward payload, including the canopy, drawers, roof racks, bull bar and all other accessories.
Does towball weight count toward payload? Yes. Towball download is weight pushing down on the vehicle and is part of the Ranger’s payload. Ford uses 10 percent of loaded trailer weight as an indicative towball estimate.
Can a Ranger tow 3,500 kg and still carry a full load? Usually not. A 3,500 kg trailer with 350 kg towball download consumes a huge portion of the Ranger’s payload. On a Wildtrak with 985 kg payload, 350 kg of towball download leaves 635 kg for the canopy, accessories, passengers and cargo combined.
Do I need a GVM upgrade for a Ranger canopy? Not automatically. A canopy alone (60 to 120 kg) is manageable within factory payload. But a canopy plus drawers plus roof rack plus fridge plus 12V plus passengers plus towball download can push the Ranger close to or over GVM. Do the maths and weigh the vehicle.
Does a suspension upgrade increase payload? No. A suspension upgrade improves how the vehicle carries weight. It does not change the legal GVM or payload on the compliance plate. Only a certified GVM upgrade changes the legal maximum.
How do I weigh my Ranger properly? Load it as you would for a real work day or trip. Weigh the whole vehicle on a public weighbridge. Weigh front and rear axles separately. If towing, weigh coupled and uncoupled. Compare all figures against GVM, GCM, axle ratings and towball limits.
What happens if my Ranger is overweight? Overloading affects braking distance, stability, tyre life, suspension and drivetrain. It is an offence under Australian road transport law. It can void insurance and create warranty issues if damage is caused by operating above the rated limits.
