BYD Shark 6 Recall (September 2026): Spare Wheel Assembly Replacement, What Owners Need to Do
BYD Australia has recalled 32,009 examples of the Shark 6 across all three variants after identifying a manufacturing defect with the spare wheel lifter assembly that could cause the spare wheel to detach while driving.
The fix is straightforward: BYD will replace the spare wheel lifter assembly with an updated design, free of charge, in approximately 30 minutes of workshop time. In the meantime, BYD advises affected owners to remove their spare wheel and drive without it until the repair is completed.
This article covers what the recall involves, which vehicles are affected, what owners should do now, how to check whether your Shark 6 is included and what the recall means for canopy and accessory builds.
Recall reference: REC-006728. Campaign: APRA2609H0001S. Published 21 September 2026.
What is the recall about?
BYD has identified that incorrect installation of the spare wheel, incorrect positioning of the spare wheel tray or insufficient fastening torque during manufacturing can cause abnormal wear of the spare wheel support cable. The spare wheel on the Shark 6 is mounted underneath the rear of the vehicle, held in place by a cable and winch lifter assembly.
Over time, continued movement and friction during normal driving can cause the cable to wear through and fail. If the cable fails, the spare wheel can detach from the vehicle while it is moving. BYD states this could create a hazard to other road users and potentially cause serious injury or death.
The issue is a manufacturing defect affecting the spare wheel tray and lifter system. The remedy is a replacement lifter assembly with an updated design.
Which vehicles are affected?
The recall covers all three Shark 6 variants sold in Australia:
| Variant | Units affected | Manufacture dates |
| Premium | 28,543 | 29 August 2024 to 12 June 2026 |
| Performance | 2,100 | 27 January 2026 to 15 June 2026 |
| Dynamic Cab Chassis | 1,366 | 26 September 2025 to 15 April 2026 |
| Total | 32,009 |
All three variants are represented. Check your VIN to confirm whether your vehicle is included.
What should owners do right now?
Step 1: Check whether your vehicle is affected
Enter your 17 character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on BYD’s Vehicle Recall Information page on the BYD Australia website. Your VIN is printed on the compliance plate and in your vehicle registration documents.
Step 2: Remove the spare wheel
BYD advises owners who wish to continue driving their vehicle before the fix is completed to remove the spare wheel. Instructions for spare wheel removal are on page 217 of the BYD Shark 6 Owner’s Handbook. Store the removed spare wheel safely (in the tub, canopy or garage) until the repair is done.
Step 3: Contact your BYD dealer to book the repair
BYD will contact affected owners via email and through the BYD App. Owners can also contact their preferred BYD dealer directly to arrange the recall work. The repair involves replacing the spare wheel lifter assembly with an updated design and takes approximately 30 minutes.
Step 4: The repair is free
There is no cost to the owner. BYD covers the replacement part and labour.

What does the repair involve?
BYD will replace the existing spare wheel lifter assembly with an updated design. The repair takes approximately 30 minutes of workshop time. Depending on your dealer’s schedule, the vehicle may need to remain at the dealership for a longer period.
After the repair is completed, the spare wheel can be reinstalled in its normal position under the vehicle.
Can you keep driving while waiting for the repair?
BYD has advised affected owners who wish to continue driving to remove the spare wheel until the remedy is completed.
The only practical consequence of driving without a spare wheel is that you will not have one available if you get a flat tyre. If you are planning remote or long distance travel before the repair, consider the implications and speak with BYD or your roadside assistance provider.
What does this mean for canopy and accessory owners?
Spare wheel location
The Shark 6’s spare wheel is mounted underneath the rear of the vehicle, not inside the tub. Removing it for the interim period does not affect tub space, canopy fitment, drawer systems, fridge placement or any internal canopy accessories.
Underbody protection
If you have aftermarket equipment around the rear underbody or spare wheel area, mention it when booking the recall appointment so the dealer can confirm whether it affects access to the lifter assembly. Some configurations may require partial panel removal, so flagging this in advance allows the dealer to schedule extra time if needed.
Weight and payload
Removing the spare wheel temporarily reduces the vehicle’s actual mass by the weight of the complete spare wheel and tyre. It does not change the vehicle’s certified GVM or published payload figures.
Carrying the removed spare? Secure it properly
If the spare wheel is stored in the tub or canopy rather than left at home, it must be properly restrained. Do not leave a full size wheel and tyre loose in the load area. Under heavy braking, an unrestrained spare wheel becomes a serious hazard to passengers, equipment and the canopy structure.
Use rated tie down straps secured to anchor points, a wheel restraint bracket or position the wheel flat in a drawer well or behind a cargo barrier where it cannot move forward, sideways or upward. The NTC Load Restraint Guide for Light Vehicles requires restraint capable of withstanding 80% of load weight forwards, 50% sideways, 50% rearwards and 20% upwards where the load is not fully contained. The load restraint basics guide covers the NTC performance standards with practical canopy examples.
Touring and remote travel
If you are planning remote or long distance travel before the repair is completed, consider the implications of travelling without a spare wheel and speak with BYD or your roadside assistance provider. Book the recall repair before any major trip so the spare wheel can be reinstalled in its proper position.
